Five Books to Improve your Relationship With Your Dog

And maybe, equally importantly, your relationship with yourself.

The leaves are falling, the air is crisp and those long summer nights are suddenly a thing of the past. There's no denying it anymore, Fall is here. And as we nestle ourselves back into our homes and cozy up for the long, dark months ahead, there's no better time to curl up with a warm drink, your dog & a good book. Read on for a few favorites from my bookshelf.

Animals Make Us Human

Temple Grandin

I picked this book up during the Vashon Sheepdog Classic in 2017, where Temple Grandin held a live talk. I was touched by her story, promptly watched her movie and dove into this book. If you're looking for insights on how to give your animals the best and happiest life, this book will inspire you through the science of how animals think, act and feel as well as Temple's own lived experiences.

Animal Wisdom: Learning from the Spiritual Lives of Animals

Linda Bender, DVM

Animals have a deep and instinctual understanding of the world around them that we often take for granted. Just because the way they experience the world is different than ours, doesn't make them inferior or us superior. In this book, veterinarian Linda Bender shares stories and scientific evidence of the intuitive, perceptive and even extrasensory abilities of animals. There's more to our four-legged friends than we know and it's up to us to listen to their wisdom.

The Soul of All Living Creatures

Vint Virga, DVM

Sometimes all we need to do to change our lives is to gain a new perspective. And by diving into the hearts, minds & souls of animals, we can learn so much about our own lives, from our relationships & values to the core of our character. Animals have so much to teach us and this book will leave you feeling forever grateful for that furry little friend curled up by your side.

Animal Wise

Virginia Morell

Have you noticed the overarching theme? Animals hold a wisdom that many of us humans have lost touch with. In our bustling day to day lives, we get so caught up with our to-do lists, that we've forgotten our true animal nature. In this book, Virginia shows us the inner world of animals and dives deep into their minds. You'll finish this book feeling appreciation for the human-animal bond and sit in awe of your beautifully intelligent furry companion.

Becoming Animal: An Earthly Cosmology

David Abram

If you're looking to dive deeper into our human entanglement with the rest of nature, this book will take you on a primal journey to rekindle your animal senses and feel your living, breathing connection to the Earth and everything on it. I believe our dogs live this way on a daily basis, always present in the moment, experiencing, feeling & sensing everything around them. If we can live this way more often, together with our dogs, a beautiful relationship will follow.

Now put down your phone, turn off the TV, invite your dog for a snuggle and read a good book!
